What we do.

Hydrotherapy, or aqua-therapy, is an excellent approach for many individuals working through mobility issues, chronic pain, and/or post-operative impairments. Hydrotherapy is a form of physical activity that uses water to assist with healing. At Balance Physiotherapy our pool is kept at a warm 35C (95F) and benefits include:

  • The warmth of the water allows muscles to relax and eases the stiffness in joints to allow for a more pain-free exercise experience. For individuals who experience muscle spasm or spasticity, movement in warm water can provide significant reduction in symptoms.

  • Water acts as a gravity eliminated environment which helps to increase the range of movement in your joints and reduce pain. It also provides a safe environment for gait re-education and learning.

  • The water can be used to provide resistance to moving your joints. By pushing your arms and legs against the water, you can improve muscle strength and endurance. Different flotation devices can also be used to provide more support or resistance.

Our in-clinic pool can be accessed either by stairs or a ceiling lift. You do not need to be able to swim to benefit from hydrotherapy as the water is shallow and all sessions are completed one on one with a licensed physiotherapist.

There are some reasons why hydrotherapy in warm water would not be suitable and all clients are screened prior to entering the pool. These include:

  • a wound or skin infection

  • a raised temperature

  • breathing difficulties

  • any uncontrolled cardiac conditions such as high blood pressure

  • a kidney condition requiring dialysis

  • a chlorine allergy

  • pregnancy

Our pool is open Monday to Friday from 9am-5pm. Please call our office to book your first appointment!
