Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy

Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy in Toronto: A therapist examines a client's neck to assess and treat balance issues and dizziness.

What we do.

Vestibular disorders and impairments are an unfortunate but frequent occurrence after head trauma. These disorders are often overlooked until the client is out of acute care and participating in active rehabilitation. Proper assessment and accurate diagnosis are key to treating vestibular issues quickly and effectively. At Balance Physiotherapy, we have therapists who are highly trained in the diagnosis of vestibular problems and the provision of Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT), an exercise-based program designed to reduce vertigo, dizziness, imbalance and falls.

The vestibular system is responsible for detecting motion and changes in head position, helping to control balance and spatial orientation. When this system is impaired, it can lead to symptoms like dizziness, loss of balance, nausea, and difficulty focusing.

VRT aims to reduce these symptoms by helping the brain adapt to changes in the vestibular system and improving coordination and balance. This is achieved through exercises and techniques tailored to each individual’s specific condition and needs.

VRT can result in effective treatment for a variety of vestibular problems, including:

  • Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)

  • Labyrinthitis

  • Vestibular Neuritis

  • Post Concussion Syndrome

Techniques Used in Vestibular Rehabilitation:

1. Habituation Exercises: These exercises involve repeated exposure to movements or visual stimuli that provoke dizziness. Over time, the brain becomes less sensitive to these triggers.

2. Balance and Gait Training: Specific exercises focus on improving balance and walking abilities.

3. Canalith Repositioning Maneuvers: Techniques are used to treat BPPV by repositioning the tiny crystals in the inner ear that cause dizziness when they become dislodged.

4. VOR (Vestibulo-Ocular Reflex) Training: Exercises that help improve the connection between the vestibular system and the eyes, allowing for bettercontrol of eye movements and reducing dizziness during head movements.

5. Eye and Head Movement Exercises: These exercises focus on improving coordination between eye movements and head motions to maintain clear vision and balance.
